The Telford beacon is a lighthouse that once guarded over the entry between King William IV Dock and the tidal harbour. Named after the famed engineer Thomas Telford, this category B structure survived the infilling of the harbour when the Tay Road Bridge was constructed but became landlocked by the road network.
Keen to preserve the heritage of Dundee’s waterfront an ambitious project saw the 170 year-old beacon relocated to the water’s edge. The project involved lifting the entire beacon in one piece and whilst keeping it upright transporting it to its new location overlooking the River Tay. It was a MASSive effort.
