Geocache Description:

SOS (Stoke or Stafford) are a monthly series of events, each with a theme and are designed to allow cachers to help each other out. The events are usually held somewhere not too far from either Stoke or Stafford, or in between!

Do you fancy being cosmoplitan and joining the Germans in celebrating this audicious day with a doner kebab?

Do you want to earn a GC souvenir badge just for attending an event?

Then join the SOS (Stoke or Stafford) gang at:

London Road Ale House, 241 London Road, Stoke-on-Trent.

Thursday April 13th from 18:00 to 22:00

(NOTE: The consumption of doner kebabs is entirely optional wink)

When I first heard of this Dönerstag celebration I was a bit perplexed as to why there were hundreds of events (299 as at 12th March!) in Germany, all taking place outside kebab shops. I already knew from my GCSE German that Thursday in German is Dönerstag and it wasn't until a kind soul on the Staffordshire Cachers Facebook page pointed out that a Döner in German is a Doner Kebab that the penny (or euro cent) dropped. So instead of meeting outside the nearby kebab shop, probably suffering from the inclement British weather, I thought that it would be a good idea to hold an event at my local pub again. At least if you do fancy throwing yourself headfirst and completely immersing yourself with this German traditional, you can at least bring your Doner Kebab into the pub and eat it in relative comfort laugh

Anyone who attended the SOS #15 event last year will be familiar with the concept of the venue. If not, then just to let you know the venue differs from the normal pubs in which we hold SOS events in, as they do not serve hot food, BUT they have a different concept whereby you can take your own hot food courtesy of a number of nearby takeaway outlets (or takeaway deliveries if you would prefer to order something from somewhere else) and the pub will even provide plates and cutlery!

As far as parking is concerned, there are usually some spaces available on Vinebank Street or The Villas or if you prefer not to park in a residential area, then there is a supermarket car park about 5 minutes walk away from the venue, which provides free parking for up to 3 hours.

Please note that the bar does not have a license to accept children so I'm afraid it's over 18s only - Sorry!

Dogs are allowed though and there is a free water bowl and doggie biscuits available to keep your pooch happy.

If you prefer to leave the car at home and are travelling by public transport, then there is a bus stop right outside the bar which serves the number 21 and 21A buses, or alternatively there are a number of buses which serve the centre of Stoke and the bar is about a 5 - 10 minute walk away. The bar is also about a 15 minute walk away from Stoke-on-Trent train station. The last trains from Stoke are as follows:

For stations in the direction of Crewe: 21:34, 22:02 and 22:51

For stations in the direction of Stafford, Wolverhampton and Birmingham:21:07,  22:08 and 22:47

For stations in the direction of Uttoxeter and Derby 19:33 and 21:18

For stations in the direction of Manchester Piccadilly 21:26, 21:46, 22:18, 22:28, 22:56 and 23:05
