Geocache Description:

Celebrating Kingston-upon-Hull's year as the UK City of Culture, the Hull Culture Cache series will take you on a whistle-stop tour of some of the locations that will host events and art installations throughout 2017. The venues are spread out across the city, suburbs and wider East Riding area. This is central to the Hull2017 ethos of engaging strongly with the local communities.

All caches in the series should be simple finds. The series is designed to show off our fabulous city and surrounding area

Some caches will contain a bonus letter on the log sheet. Make a note of the letters you find and the cache that they were found in. These will be needed for a future bonus cache

11. Burton Constable Hall

History

Burton Constable Hall is an Elizabethan manor house with some parts dating back to the 1300s. It has been home to the Constable Family for over 400 years. In the thirteenth century the Constables added their name to the manor of Burton. The lower part of the north tower, known as Stephen’s Tower, is the oldest part of the house that survives and had served to protect the village since the reign of King Stephen in the twelfth century. The new Elizabethan mansion was built in the 1560s by Sir John Constable and incorporated remains of the earlier manor house.

Over 300 acres of historic grade II* listed parkland surrounds the Hall. Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown was commissioned from 1772-82 to landscape the park. Brown’s scheme involved joining up the series of fishponds in order to create two lakes separated by a dam-cum-bridge of his own design. A comprehensive programme of parkland restoration has been in place since 1999.

Burton Constable is also home to the skeleton of a 58½ foot-long sperm whale. The bull whale had been stranded on the shore at nearby Tunstall in 1825. As Lords of the Seigniory of Holderness, The Constables had claim to anything washed upon the Holderness shore, so the whale became the property of the Burton Constable estate.

In time, the skeleton of the whale was transported to the parkland at Burton Constable where it was articulated on a wrought iron framework in 1836. The mounted skeleton was again examined, this time by Thomas Beale (1807-49) whose published account of 1839 came to attention of Herman Melville, who published his renowned Moby Dick in 1851.

The remains of the skeleton were recovered from the park in 1995 and are now exhibited in the Great Barn in the Stable Block.
