Geocache Description:

!n April the LEC event visits Epsom Downs Racecourse! Home of the famous ‘Derby’ horserace held in June. As the downs are largely a public area the race is unique in the fact that it is free to watch. The first recorded race on the downs was held in 1661, with the first Derby being run in 1780.

As an extra bit of fun there will be some games on the day. The winners will receive some LEC goodies! There is plently of parking nearby.

This is also the racecourse where Emily Davison, the Suffragette, died when she went under the rails during the 1913 Derby. There is a memorial at the site (see waypoint). Modern historians agree that Davison was trying to disturb the Derby in order to draw attention to her cause, rather than to commit suicide, and 2013 analysis of newsreel has supported the idea that Davison was reaching up to attach a scarf to the bridle of the King's horse.
