Some bushwhacking is required to get to WP 2 and the Final. I recommend using the main trail system as much as possible taking a 90° approach off the trail when closing in on WP 2. Approaching the Final consider taking a 45° approach avoiding the Horsetail Reed. Once you leave the hard path the ground can be soft and muddy, if it has rained recently. Give yourself a minimum of two hours to complete the cache from the causeway as the complete route is 4-5 miles. Maps of the island are available in the parking area.
I’ve seen in previous cache descriptions posting coordinates for the causeway. I think it’s a good idea, especially if you are getting off the main trails to search the bush for geocaches. N 38° 39.893, W 090° 40.895.
NOTE: Be aware that hunting is allowed in this area during certain times of the year. Howell Island is not accessible via the causeway when the Missouri River is above 16-feet on the St. Charles area river gauge. Please check the MDC website for a link to hunting regulations and the river level gauge.
