Looking for a view? Need to get away from it all? This is the place. Rim Lake Cache is located on top of the Aquarius Plateau in Southern Utah. It is the first cache placed in this area and well worth the visit but be warned. This cache will require a high clearance 4 wheel drive vehicle or ATV. Please do NOT attempt this in a car you will break something. From Bicknel it is a 2 hour trip, from Escalante it is longer and the road is real bad from that side. This is why I rated it so high.
We spent a full week camping in this area and it is spectacular (IMHO). Rim Lake is clearly noted on all USFS maps and the roads, (such that they are) are clearly marked on the map. The cache is not particularly hard to find but do watch your step, it is on the downhill side of a 1500 foot cliff at an elevation of 10,900 feet. The roads on the plateau are only open from June 16 to mid November.
During our trip we were fortunate to see elk herds, dear, wild turkey, yellow bellied marmots, antelope and a golden eagle. Take time to enjoy the mountain and tread lightly. Near the cache you can also see a plant called “Aquarius paint brush” It is a small ground plant with yellow blooms that resemble a paint brush and it only grows in the Boulder Mountain area. Kinda special, they call it an endemic species.
A word of caution. The area is extreamly dry. Many of the lakes are dry and the brush is just waiting for a spark.
We salted the cache with a bunch of worthless junk, a couple books and our trademark lizards. But there is a special prize in this cache. Getting the prize is up to each person and fairly easy. In the cache you will find a few key chains from the Colorado Belle Hotel & Casino in Laughlin Nevada. Take one of these key chains and take a picture of yourself holding the key chain at the cache location. The picture must prove you are at the cache. (I know the mountain very well and have 40+ pictures from the cache location to compare with). Enter your find here and email me the picture of yourself with enough information to identify you.
