CM 03 – HISTORY OF 1 GNC

The city of Münster breathes history. You find it throughout the town. As a garrison, the town had quite some experience with the military and with peace brokering. Therefore it seemed a logical choice to situate a binational Corps on the grounds of this municipality.

In the late 80s, early 90s the Cold War was over and both Germany and The Netherlands had to cut down their respective defence budgets whilst maintaining their military and political aspirations at Corps level. Asa result the idea of merging the 1 (German) Army Corps and the 1 (Netherlands) Corps started to shape.

The plan had far reaching consequences but careful planning and preparing, combined with the will to succeed, paved the way. In 1993 it was decided to effectuate the plan and to put it into motion. The first commander would be Dutch and Münster was chosen as its garrison.

With the two framework nations well suited to each other The 1 GNC widens its horizon. In the first years of the new millennium the Corps works towards its certification, to show NATO that it is ready to take command of operations anywhere in the world.

The period following the year 2000, shows increasing interest from other NATO members to fill positions within the Corps. Slowly, the 1GNC becomes more multinational. The framework nations, German and The Netherlands, still form the backbone. The influx of other NATO members had a positive impact on the Corps: military experience was growing rapidly and capabilities were expanding.

And now, to solve the mystery, you should answer the following questions:

A: Year of inauguration of the 1GNC

B: Family name of its first commander

C: Year of its first deployment to Afghanistan

D: Number of nations in the 1GNC on January 1st, 2017

Code: ABCD
