One of my favorite areas of Grant Park, the Milledge Fountain is a great place for picnics, gatherings of family and friends, and is the location of the weekly farmer's market every Sunday from April to December.
The fountain itself was designed by the architectural firm of Edwards & Sayward and constructed in 1927. The area has recently undergone some renovations and the fountain is currently in the process of being restored.
"The west side (facing Cherokee Ave.) had an intricately tiled frieze with a fish spouting water into a bowl which then spilled into a collection pool. The fountain created an inviting entrance to the park and helped differentiate between the city and the park experience. The east side (facing the park) is framed by winding staircases on either side and a grotto effect of granite block with a collection pool. The fountain is not operating at present."
It is located adjacent to the intersection of Cherokee Avenue and Milledge Avenue, which was named for John Milledge, a former governor and senator for the state of Georgia, with ties to the founder of the University of Georgia in Athens.
"...in 1801, a committee from the university's board of trustees selected a site for the university on a hill above Cedar Shoals in what was then Jackson County. On July 25, John Milledge, one of the trustees and later governor of Georgia, bought 633 acres (256 ha) from Daniel Easley and donated it to the university. Milledge named the surrounding area Athens after the city that was home to the academy of Plato and Aristotle in Greece."
The town of Milledgeville was named after him and served as the state capital from 1804 to 1868.
This cache container actually was hidden elsewhere in the park over two years ago, but I never ended up publishing that one. Today I finally decided to see if it was still there and when I saw that it was, I decided to bring back my Milledge Mystery...in a slightly different form.
