This location is known as "Playas Siding: it was a rail stop, equipment for the mines, cattle was loaded, and other items.The sign say 1902 the rail was built.... Well Poncho Villa raid Columbus to the east in 1916! Geronimo surrendered not too far to the South West, This part of the country was bought from Mexico in the Gadsen Purchase. The Clantons (from the shoot out at OK Corral in Tombstone Az.) rode this area. Smugglers to and from Mexico used this area. Ranches were & still are plentiful.
In 1902 in this area you wouldn't have seen the Mesquites or Creosote, it was all grass.... all grass up to your waist! Just to the south of here was Playas Lake which held water all year around! It was the Cattle Barron's in the earlier part of the 1900s that destroyed that. At one time hundreds of thousand heads of cattle were in this valley.
To the south is Mexico... the mountain range due north that you can see is 25+ miles away! due west the far range is 30 miles. To the South East is the old town of Playas (now owned by New Mexico Tech), it was a mining town until not that long ago. In that range of mountains continuing to the south were once filled with miners, searching for Gold, Silver, Copper.... There were strikes and booms! Mine shafts & tunnels are all through that area.
Does this area seem remote to you? Well it is... Nearest Walmart 75 miles McDonalds 39 miles. Grocery store 39 miles. Gas station 10 miles next closest is 35 miles!.
If this place seems familiar to you, it may be! This very area was featured on an episode of "Dual Survival" with Cody Lundean & Joe Teti! Dont worry they were well taken care of... AC, cold water, and they slept in Playas! Also if you watch that episode... the trough which Joe kills the snake, well its about 10miles +- SE from where you are now. The dry lake bed they were rescued walking across from is literally due south of you!
The night sky here is so clear, you see every little star, you see the milky way and all...
Anyway, hope you like this cache (its my 1st!), Just remember your standing in the footprints of Geronimo & Poncho Villa and who knows who else. Original Cache Contents are/ were TB-"3 Round burst" which is brand new. Playas firefighter kids stickers, 1 Quarter, 1 Dime, 1 Nickel, 1 penny, 1 penny with a cross cut out of it. 1 "weres George" 1$ trackable dollar.
