Geocache Description:

The Coastguard Cottages

The Smugglers Series  Welcome to the final in a 5 cache series, are you ready for the challenge?

NOTE: This location has been changed due to issues with this path blocking public access. The virtual cache coordinates will take you down to the old path running behind the Coastguard Station on the River Yealm and if open it is a lovely walk.

However if short on time, ignore the virtual coordinates and instead just solve the puzzle below. Happy caching.

Using codes found in Smugglers 1 - 4 break the following puzzle to locate the smugglers loot.

N50 19.(A + B + C - D) D (D - B)   W004 03.A C (A + B)

The cache is in the "Pirate's Treasure Chest". There is room for visiting TB's. Please sign the log and replace as per hint.

LIMITED PHONE / INTERNET SIGNAL, DOWNLOAD ALL NECESSARY INFORMATION AND HINT (VERY IMPORTANT) BEFORE LEAVING.

History

The Coastguard Station:

The Coastguard Service was formed from the Preventive Waterfront in 1822.  The Coastguard Station and cottages were built on the steep banks of the River Yealm almost 200 years ago; they had a deep mooring for their cutter so that they could quickly take off in pursuit of smugglers.  The cottages are now used as holiday accomodation but there is still no road to them; access is by foot or boat.  The track you will walk on, is the same one used 200 years ago by those first coastguards.  You will pass the old Coastguard Station down on your right as you walk through this steeply wooded valley.  Look through the gate of the Coastguard Station and you will see the old Lifeboat Station on the other side of the river.

If you enjoyed this mini-series, why not look into the other Wembury Local History Society caches, that are all hidden around the Parish of Wembury.

The National Trust have outlined a superb walk that covers all the Geocaches in this mini series, and also several more. Please keep children and dogs well away from the cliff edge, keep dogs on a lead if they are likely to run off.    https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/wembury/trails/wembury-bay-and-the-river-yealm-walk

Many thanks to the National Trust for the upkeep of this section of the SW Coastal Path, and also for allowing our geocache to be placed here.
