The first Dönerstag was hosted on April 5, 2007 by moenk at a Döner Snack Bar in Berlin to honor the place of origin of the Döner.
The goal was to create a German-wide “decentralized Megaevent”, which was not sanctioned by geocaching.com. Instead multiple events were held all over Europe, from Germany and Austria to the United Kingdom and Switzerland.
These special events are held each year on the Thursday before Good Friday. In German, this makes the name “Dönerstag” a pun: The German word for Thursday is “Donnerstag.” Döner translates to Donair Kebab (Turkey), Shawarma (Arab) or Gyros (Greek).
Last year, over 6000 players attended 233 Dönerstag events. This year even Signal the frog travels to Germany to collect the Dönerstag Souvenir.
The full German Dönerstag event involves participants enjoying kebabs together. However, if you don't want to eat, just be there.
