Geocache Description:

Michael Costello was born with half a heart. He received a heart transplant and used Geocaching as physical therapy.

Sadly Michael passed away on 11/03/17 aged just 14. This cache was placed on his birthday 19/03/17 in his honour.

This cache is a lot like children with heart defects. They appear no different from others on the outside but have a special heart inside.

My daughter Charley was born with the same congenital heart defect as Michael which required 3 open heart surgeries so this cache is close to home both literally and figuratively.

FACTS ABOUT CHD

  • Every day in Australia eight babies are born with a heart defect. That’s almost 3,000 each year.
  • It’s estimated that 32,000 children (under 18 years of age) are currently living with CHD in Australia.
  • These children have congenital heart disease – not coronary, which is what most adult heart patients have.
  • There is no known cure or prevention.
  • Up to 20% of heart defects are gene-linked abnormalities. They have nothing to do with diet.
  • Some children acquire heart conditions during childhood, e.g. cardiomyopathy, Kawasaki disease (- 200 p.a *) or as a result of rheumatic fever.
  • A disproportionate number of indigenous children suffer from acquired heart disease, often as a result of rheumatic fever which is prevalent in many communities.
  • Approx half of the children diagnosed with heart disease require surgery to correct the defect.
  • Childhood heart disease is the biggest killer of Australian kids under one.
  • Every week, four precious lives are lost.
  • For the first time in our history there are more people over the age of 16 with CHD than younger. This is due to medical advances. In days gone by they were the ‘blue babies’, most of whom died at birth.

This cache is one of several that make up the Bushland Beach Hillock Trail (BBHT) which compliments the Bushland Beach Walk (BBW) and the Bushland Beach Goicoechea Circuit (BBGC).

This 3.5km circuit combines wide bush trails and paved walkways and should take most geocachers around an hour plus searching time to complete. Individually this is a park and grab.

Congratulations to Karicka for being the FTF.
