The current City Seal of Norfolk is actually the fourth seal for the City. The first was presented in 1740, only to be revised the next year. The seal was modified again in 1845. In spring 1913, at the suggestion of Barton Myers the previous fall, the current seal was born. It had a full sail ship on top with the words “et terra et mare divitiae tuae” (Latin for “Both by land and by sea thy riches (are)”. Underneath that are wheat sheaves and a plow with the motto “Crescas” (Thou shalt grow). The boarder surrounding it states City of Norfolk at the top with the dates that Norfolk was incorporated as a town (1682), borough (1736), and city (1845). The Clerk keeps the seal and attaches it to all official documents.
What is the translation of the Norfolk motto?
a) Thou shalt grow N 36 52.622 W 076 18.282
b) Norfolk forever N 36 53.112 W 076 18.727
