NATO’s only command in North America is located in Norfolk. In 1954 to celebrate the alliance, encourage cultural exchange, and help the City pursue international trade, the first Azalea Festival was held. Each year a Most Honored Nation is featured. Their culture is featured, and one of their citizens crowned as Queen Azalea at the Norfolk Botanical Gardens. The week-long celebration features a parade, art shows, concerts, food and film events, and an international tattoo. Most of the events are free. In 2009, the name was changed to the Norfolk NATO Festival.
