Thomas Willougby claimed the original land in the what is now the Ocean View area in 1625. After the “harry cane” of 1667, Willoughy’s son, Thomas II, awoke to find a large patch of land next to his home where there was once water. The family was quick to lay claim to the new land. During storms in 1749 and 1806, the land enlarged creating “Willoughby Spit.” The area was annexed by the City in 1923 along with Ocean View. Storms in the past century have eroded the beaches there. The Army Corps of Engineers is working with the City to protect and expand the beaches of Willoughby Spit and vicinity.
