Lambert’s Point was named for Thomas Lambert, who acquired the land in Elizabeth River Shire back in 1635. In the mid-1800s, William Mahone used the area to set up part of his Norfolk & Petersburg Railroad. After setbacks from Yellow Fever in 1855, and disruptions from the Civil War (1861-1865), Mahone expanded his railroad which became a major transporter of bituminous coal. The first coal pier was built in Lambert’s Point in 1886. By 1900, Norfolk was the leader in coal exports on the East Coast. Today Pier 6 is the largest and fastest transloading facility for coal in the northern hemisphere.
