The first public high school in Norfolk opened in 1894. Today Norfolk is served by five high schools. Matthew Fontaine Maury opened in 1911. Taking its mascot, the Commodores, from the occupation of its namesake, its colors are blue and orange. They serve as the medical academy for NPS. Also founded in 1911 was Booker T Washington. The Fighting Bookers have maroon, white and gold as their colors. Norview, founded in 1922, hosts the city’s science and engineering academy. An early principal liked to fly planes earning them the mascot of the Pilots. Their colors are blue and white. Home to the IB program, Granby was founded in 1939. Granby’s colors are silver, blue & gold with a mascot of a comet. The last school to open was Lake Taylor in 1967. The Mighty Titans have red, blue and white as their colors.
