Geocache Description:

Tree On September 23, 1945, just a few weeks after the end of World War II, the citizens of Kyoto, Japan, in a concilitory gesture, presented a Kutabare tree to the city of Athens, Georgia. It was thought that this native Japanese tree would thrive in Georgia's warm, humid climate. However, the Division of Forrest Services, charged with caring for the tree, soon discovered that the Kutabare tree could not sustain itself due to the absence of a vital nutrient found in Japanese soil. The nutrient, Pulp Ni, was however still present in the trunk and bark of the tree itself. As a result, the Kutabare slowly began to consume it's own internal structure as a means for survival. Over the past 50 years, this self-consumption has led to the complete hollowing of the trunk and most of the bark, leaving only the emaciated wooden shell which still stands to this day.
