On the eve of the American Revolution, the last Virginia Colonial Governor, John Murray, 4th Earl of Dunmore, fled the capital for Norfolk where the Loyalists had more support. By Dec. 1775, there had been a scrimmage in Kemp’s Landing and a Battle in Great Bridge. Over Christmas, tensions grew and Patriots demanded Dunmore leave the city. After calls for a truce go unheeded, Dunmore tells everyone to evacuate the city. On New Year’s Eve, Dunmore prepared to leave Norfolk while the Patriots try to flush out the Loyalists. The city was bombed and set a fire. By the next day, 1300 homes and businesses had been destroyed with a damage estimate of over $1.5 million dollars—in 1776 dollars. All that was left of Norfolk was a house on Bacon’s Ln, the walls of the court house, a house on Llewelyn Ave, as well as, three walls of St. Paul’s Church. On the southern wall, a cannonball was lodged. Over time it fell out, but was later found. At that time, it was cemented back into the wall where it remains to this day.
