The Parish Church of St. John the Baptist, Yaverland
The church of St John the Baptist was built as a private chapel by the de Aula family of Yaverland Manor in the 12th century and is primarily all of one date, circa 1150. In the 13th century a chantry chapel seems to have been added to the south, lighted by a small two-light plate traceried window. A general re-modelling took place in the 15th century when it became a parish church. The earlier windows were replaced with square-headed two-light windows, a new three-light window in the east wall was inserted, a hagioscope was cut through the southern pier and a rood beam and loft were put across the chancel arch. The North Aisle, organ chamber, vestry, and wooden bell-cote with shingled spire, were added by Ewan Christian in 1888-9.
The building was designated a Grade I Listed Building on 14 March 1949.
