Geocache Description:

A tribute cache to the ancient stone of Stoneham.

Only a few tiny fragments remain of the ancient stone of Stoneham. The stone is believed to pre-date the historical site of Stonehenge. It was sited at the Stoneham Lane and Chestnut Avenue junction about where the mini-roundabout is today. When the junction was widened in the late 1970s there was a lot of excitement in the Eastleigh Archeology Society (now sadly extinct) as fragments were uncovered when the groundworks were in progress. It even made headlines in the late edition of the Southampton Echo on April 1, 1978. I was therefore very pleased to be able to place this tribute cache to remind the local community of the significance Eastleigh has with regard to the ancient history of Britain.
