Geocache Description:

A walking tour of the Murals in Downtown Brooksville, Florida.

The Murals of Brooksville

There are several murals in downtown Brooksville, FL that are under the care of the Hernando County Arts Council.  There is also one private mural on the back wall of a print shop.  The purpose of this geocache is to give you a tour of these murals so that more people may enjoy them.

The geocache will take you on a walking tour of downtown Brooksville to each of 6 locations where you will view a mural or two.  At each location you will need to find a number, per the instructions below, and those numbers will give you the coordinates to the final geocache location where you can sign the log and get a smiley.

Permission has been granted by the Arts Council for the use of the images and by the Hernando County Parks & Recreation Department for the placement of the geocache.  The owner of the print shop has granted us permission to use the mural on his wall in this geocache.

Go to each of the locations listed below and figure out the numbers A thru F, then substitute those numbers in the coordinates above to find the geocache.

You are looking for a bison tube in a downtown park.

Location A           N 28 33.315      W 82 23.302

This mural is of the old time drug store and the Doctors.  Look at the detail in the drug store; the items for sale (some with prices), the difference in products from what you see in drug stores today, and the activities going on.  And check out the Doctors and imagine the years they served the community. You are looking for the price of something called men’s pomade (which is right by the canned steam).  Subtract the first digit of the price from the second digit.

This is number A.

Location B           N 28 33.278       W 82 23.306

This is the Civil War Mural.  It is a representation of the Brooksville Raid.  Note the women (attending the injured), the horses and their riders, and the musical instruments.  The mural faces a plaza and there is a sign at the edge of the plaza that describes the mural.  Beside the sign are paving bricks with the names of businesses and individuals.  One brick near the sign is for a masonry company.  How many letters are in the longest word of the name of the company?  Add one to this number.

This is number B.

Location C           N 28 33.227       W 82 23.267

Note: October 2021. Update to new mural for location C. Original mural has been removed.

This is the Women's Club History Mural and is the newest mural here in Brooksville. It pictures a street, some old and new buildings, and women (mostly) in various activities in the life of Brooksville over the years. In the portion of the mural closest to the sidewalk is a street scene. How many people are standing on the brick portion of the street?

This is number C.

Location D           N 28 33.250       W 82 23.257

This is the Livery Stable Mural.  Notice the old modes of transportation and be grateful for your car.

To the right of the mural is a door and beside the door are some boxes mounted to the wall.  On the first box is a two digit number.  What is the second digit of the number?

This is number D.

Location E            N 28 33.242       W 82 23.226

This is a Street Scene Mural.  Notice the people strolling and check out the cat.  A man is holding a newspaper.  Find the last word on the newspaper.  Subtract three (3) from the number of letters in the last word.

This is number E.

Location F            N 28 33.267       W 82 23.229

These Murals feature the Fire Department and the Police Department with a truck and car probably from the 1930s.  It looks like that Dalmatian is ready to jump on the fire truck as it comes out the door.

The street in front of the murals is paved with bricks.  How many letters in the longest word on the bricks?  Subtract 3 from the number of letters in the word.

This is number F.
