The BYOB series started in 2009 with a challenge; a perfect spot for a geocache on the Old Rail Bridge over the Denmark River, but no hiding place. Not even for a nasty little nano! What to do? My solution was to firmly attach an unobtrusive but clearly visible strong steel box to the bare fence. And lock it with a secret mechanism which required a secret key. Something readily attainable that no one would associate with a curious metal thing screwed to a fence rail.
BYOB stands for 'Bring Your Own Battery' . In this case a 9 volt PP3. (Preferably a good quality alkaline type). This is your 'key'. Find the two metal contacts and press the battery terminals to them and Voila the magic happens. And if it doesn't happen immediately, keep the battery on for a few more seconds. A flatish battery will take a bit of time to charge the circuit. If that doesn't help, get a new battery!
This cache is a version of that original BYOB#1, but, to celebrate this special location (my old workplace) the internal mechanism is now fully electronic rather than electro-mechanical. (for any techie-nerds out there, there are photos of 'The Works' in the Gallery). And of course, being a 'Small' container, you will have to Bring Your Own Pencil.
This year we are celebrating 50 years of WAIT/Curtin. 1967 - 2017. I started at WAIT in 1968 as a Senior Technician in the Biology Department and left in 2006 as Senior Technical Officer in the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Those 38 years were interesting and, as it turned out, great training for geocache making! This geocache is my small contribution to the celebration.
PARKING
During semester week days Curtin University is abuzz with activity. Muggles everywhere! And there is NO free parking during this time. My advice is to do this cache on the weekends or public holidays or semester breaks! Or try after 4:30 PM. The Security guys are supposed to know about geocaching and should understand if you explain what you are doing. Tell 'em it's an Official Curtin Geocache!
