Wood-pastures and other landscapes with scattered trees are recognized for their major ecological value worldwide. Wood-pastures are among the oldest land-use types in Europe and have high ecological and cultural importance. Those are under rapid decline all over Europe because of changes in land use, tree cutting, and lack of regeneration. In Hungary, 1970s witnessed the disappearance of traditional farming methods because of the collectivisation of agriculture. In case of lack of grazing, spiked plants spread instead of grass, and spiky shrub (hawthorn, sloe, blackberry and dog-rose) occupy the area a few years later. A few decades later, trees grow, and the area becomes into forest.
Wood-pastures of South-West Somogy (Belső-Somogy that is Inner Somogy) The level territory of Inner-Somogy had come into existence by silting of Pannonian-sea with clayey-sandy sediments 5-10 million years ago. Later the ancient rivers covered the level ground wit rough quarz sand-layer of 5-10 m thickness. The wind formed flat sandhills of 5-20 m height. In the depressions the sand disappeared and the watertight layer of soil got to the surface. Periodic lakes and marshes are formed here. On the other hand, the sandhills quickly run dry. Therefore this field are not too suitable for plough-land, nevertheless are suitable for grazing. The lonely trees in the pasture have grown high with thick bole and wide crown.
