In 1900, Lafayette Park decided to start acquiring a variety of animals. In 1901, the 65-acre park was designated a Lafayette Zoological Park and had over 200 animals. The original entrance is the structure at 35th & Granby. In 1974, the Zoo was fenced off from the park. The zoo was rechristened the Virginia Zoological Park in 1985, and accredited by the AZA four years later. The past few decades have seen massive renovations and additions. Today it is home to 350 animals covering 115 species.
