Water, water everywhere. Norfolk is 96 square miles, of which 42 square miles are water. You pretty much can’t leave the city without a bridge or tunnel. There are three main tunnels out of Norfolk. Prior to their construction, ferries were in place. One between Norfolk and Portsmouth still exists. However, many prefer to take the Downtown Tunnel, Norfolk’s oldest, which was completed in 1952, and expanded in 1989. The next span to open allowed faster travel to Hampton. The HRBT opened in 1956 with a new span added in 1976. The newest tunnel is the Midtown which was the second span to connect Norfolk to Portsmouth. Originally opened in 1962, a new span doubled the traffic capacity in 2016.
