At the turn of the 20th century, the end of Granby St has as its centerpiece the brand-new Ocean View Amusement Park. Its centerpiece was the coaster “the Southern Belle.” Later, the Belle was replaced by “The Skyrocket” or simply the “Rocket.” The park had a variety of attractions and was the place to be for a number of decades. In the 1970s, attendance started to dwindle. The movie “Rollercoaster” filmed there, and for a bit upped attendance, but not be enough. The Park officially shut down on Labor Day 1978. It partially reopened the next year for filming of the TV-movie “The Death of Ocean View Park.” For the end of the movie the park was blown up. People expected the coaster to go down quickly. However, the explosives did not bring down the Rocket as planned. In order to get the last shot, a bull dozer pulled the structure apart off camera while a bomb was detonated.
