One of Norfolk’s most notable citizens never “lived” here until after his death. Five-star General Douglas MacArthur was a military man for most of his life. His father, a military hero in his own right, married Mary Pinkney “Pinky” Hardy a native of Norfolk. While the General never lived here, he considered his mother’s birthplace home, and wished to be buried here. Upon his passing in 1964, the old City Hall and courthouse was converted into the MacArthur Memorial. Today it houses a museum, as well as the remains of the General and his wife, Jean.
