La piazza è in posizione centrale tra piazza Giovanni Bovio e piazza Garibaldi, cioè tra Piazza Borsa e la Ferrovia, e presenta una pianta circolare, lungo la quale si affacciano le quattro facciate dei palazzi neorinascimentali, così come molti degli edifici costruiti tra la fine del 1800 e l'inizio del 1900 nella zona tra via Depretis, corso Umberto I fino e piazza Garibaldi.
Al centro della piazza c'è il cantiere di una stazione della metropolitana non ancora aperta, chiamata Duomo.
