Nauticus, or the National Maritime Center, was incorporated in 1988. The current building opened in June 1994. The museum boasts interactive science exhibits, theaters and aquariums. The Hampton Roads Naval Museum and the Chesapeake Bay office of the NOAA are also housed in the building. In 1997, the Navy announced that one of the largest battleships, the USS Wisconsin (BB-64), ever built would be sent there as well. Decommissioned in 1996, the ship arrived in Norfolk on Pearl Harbor Day (7 Dec) 2000 which was the 57th anniversary of its launch. It opened to the public the following April. In 2010, the vessel was officially transferred to the City of Norfolk.
