Geocache Description:

Enjoy this beautiful mural in one of Oliver's many parks.  This cache is designed for a slick and stealthy grab.  Enjoy!

SUMMARY:

There are a lot of nice public displays of art in Edmonton and the mural on this summer programs building is a great example.  In recent years the park has been very nicely renovated thanks to the Oliver Community League and funding from the Province of Alberta, the City of Edmonton, fundraisers and private donations.  There is a new playground, a spray park, and this beautiful mural depicting scenes from the Oliver area of Edmonton from years past.  The mural, replacing a plain old cream colored walls, has really brought life to the park.

THE CACHE:

Designed for total stealth.  You will be able to find this cash all while looking totally natural and cool.  Even in the presence of visitors to the park.  How?  Once you are in the right location you will be able to comfortably enjoy a view of the mural using your eyes, while you "see" the cache with your fingers.  No one will be the wiser.  Exracting the cache using pure stealth will allow you to remain exactly where you are to open it.  If no one sees you extract or replace it, there's no need to "make off with it" to a secret place while you open it and fill out the log.

As you feel for the cache notice exactly where it is placed and please try to place it back right where is was after you are done.  The cache is technically visible to the eye but is a like a chameleon and blends well into the scenery, not likely to be found by the unsuspecting eye.  But it's important it is placed back in the same orientation  / place.

TIPS:

This cache is best appreciated by day to see all sides of the mural with all it's detail. Also, BYOP.

MORE INFO:

"Kitchener Park was created by community groups in 1923. Even the trees here were provided by the Oliver Community League in partnership with other organizations. In 2003, the Oliver Community League, under the direction of long time President Hilda Sucre, instigated a needs assessment of the park.

We now have a spray park, mural, and wonderful new playground space, officially for ages 0-12, but really for all ages. The train theme recognizes the history of rail in Oliver."

The 100-foot project, which wraps around a small building in Kitchener Park, was commissioned in conjunction with playground developments to add to the community's vitality.

“It’s got a kids theme to it, it’s really bright,” said Kris Friesen, the artist who painted the mural. “I wanted it to have kids’ colours but have an adult scene.”

The mural, which took a year and a half from planning to unveiling, depicts a variety of buildings and streets from Oliver’s past as well as its modern landscape.

“The idea is that someone who really knows the area and its history should be able to pick out actual buildings as they were,” said Friesen, though he acknowledges that he added a little artist’s interpretation to the scenes.

The mural has been very well received, especially by children, according to Oliver residents.

“It’s wonderful. It really captures the vibrant spirit of the community,” said Lorna Hayes, who frequently visits the park with her four-year-old. “My daughter thinks it’s so pretty.”

“It’s like something out of a storybook,” added Jesse Ross, another resident.
