An easy driveby cache in a nice location.
There is a nice walk nearby up to the top of Costa Head, which provides great views south acoss the West Mainland of Orkney and the islands of Rousay and Eynhallow to the east. The currents running through Eynhallow Sound are very impressive particularly during strong tides. The cliff areas are breeding grounds for the Common Atlantic Grey seals. At the top of Costa Head are the remains to the first Wind Turbine built in the UK, sadly it was blown over.... Although a new wind farm on the left of the head is in the planning stage.
Across the sound at Rousay you can see the barn structure containing Midhowe chambered cairn, broch, remains of crofting life and more. A real treat for any visitors or history buffs. Of course the island is only accessable from the ferry from Tingwall jetty.
Soon to open along the cliff front at the bottom of the hill you currently stand on will be St Magnus Way, a walking trail that starts at the Broch of Gurness and continues along the coast to Birsay, down through Finstown and Orphir and so on. Keep your eyes open for a potential future caching trail!
The cache is a 100mm clip lock box, containing trackables, log book, FTF gift and the stamp for your notepads. Feel free to leave any trackables to pass on.
A big congratulations to bobthehammy for their first FTF!
