Geocache Description:

A walking tour of Smithfield through the Buffalo Greenway Walking and Biking Trail will share information regarding the history of Smithfield. Please take the time to visit the actual locations for more information.

Brochures for the walking tour will be found the ammo can at the 01 BGW – Masonic Lodge cache.

Most of the caches are large green bison tubes hanging at various heights to protect them from flooding that occurs periodically.  A note on the cache page will alert you to a different type of container.

17 BGW - Freedmen’s Schoolhouse:

This building is one of Smithfield’s most historically significant landmarks. Originally a two-room schoolhouse, it was built by the federal Freedmen’s Bureau in 1869 for the New York based American Missionary Association on the adjacent corner lot of the First Missionary Baptist Church. It was moved to its present location about 1887 and continued to serve as a public school for African Americans until 1913.
