HBC13 Witness Heritage Tree Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

rtmyss: This has been continuing to be a problematic site. The coins are nearly gone, and there are still plenty of other caches left to use for qualifying, so it's time to close this one out.

This Black Cottonwood was the Witness Tree for the Joseph Avery Land Claim in 1853.  This tree is nearly as large as the state champion and is one of Corvallis most massive trees.  Witness trees are often the only witness to the history in a particular area.  Original public land surveys performed in the 1800s mapped the land for Euro-American settlement.  Corners of sections and quarter sections were marked either by a post on prairies or by blazes on witness trees in woodland areas.  Witness trees stood sentinel over the landscape as Euro-American settlers used the land’s resources to build the communities we live in today.  This Witness Tree marked the easterly edge of Joseph Avery’s, Land Claim.

Click this link to download the passport and coin challenge instructions. A special thanks to subwaymark for helping make this available as a .pdf! There will be a few passports available outside the door at "Visit Corvallis" or inside during business hours. There are plenty of coins still available.
