The foundation Stone for Corpus Christi Catholic Church was laid in 1936 and the following year the first stage of the building was complete and was opened by Archbishop Thomas Williams on February 18th 1937. Partly because of the war, but mostly because of scarcity of money and materials, the second phase was not completed until 1953. Simplicity of style is a feature of the church but the main feature is the brilliantly coloured stained glass east window.
J.R.R. Tolkien attended Corpus Christi. His daughter in law, Faith Tolkien , a well known artist, was commissioned to design and execute, in cold cast bronze, an original sequence of the Stations of the Cross, which you can see around the walls. The work was begun in 1985 and completed by 1988.
