Geocache Description:

A walk to an old wood with great views across the Golden Vale.

Ballyriggin wood, or the Palatine Wood is a small piece of woodland that was planted by the original group  of  palatines in 1759 when 50 families settled in the area. They had earlier left the Rheinish Palatine in Germany to escape religious persecution. Local palatine names include Steep and Mee.

Unfortunately the wood is not regenerating and the trees are getting more vulnerable to storms as they age. A few local people have tried to grow some from cones collected in the wood but, despite tender loving care and the use of polytunnels, they have not succeeded.

The T rating reflects the fallen trees that have to be crossed to get to the cache. I have added to the hint in view of the overgrowth of the , now, faint path to the cache

There is a, very, minor road that passes by the wood but there are not any parking spaces. Please park in Kilfinane and take the walking path at the given trailhead.
