Money is a song from the 1972 musical "Cabaret", based on the play by the same name from 1966. This in turn was based on the 1939 book "The Berlin Stories" by Christopher Isherwood which was made into a play "I am a Camera" in 1951.
The film is set in the Weimar Republic in Germany in 1931 and a vital part of the film and play is the disturbing growing influence of the Nazi Party in German life.
The film "Cabaret" was a sensation in 1972, winning many Oscars, including a Best Actress gong for Liza Minelli as the lead Sally Bowles, and Best Supporting Actor for Joel Grey as the Emcee. Both appear onstage in this iconic song about the influence of money, referencing the dire straits of the working classes during the Great Depression compared to the luxury enjoyed by the rich, even during straitened times of post world war 1 Germany.
