Geocache Description:

ENG: The Jarales mining district is located southwest of Carratraca.

The district was the most important mining centre of chromium- and nickel exploitation that existed in Spain from the middle of the 19th century until the decades between the 40s and the 60s of the 20th century.

The San Juan shaft had a depth of about 90 meters with 4 levels of exploitation, approximately one every 20 meters down. At each level of the horizontal gallery, there were a crossing every 25 meters.

There have been rumours about diamonds around Carratraca since the 18th century. In periods, people have been looking for treasures here.

In the 1960s the diamond prospecting intensified in the area, an operation both enigmatic and speculative, large plants for treatment of aggregates were set up, and washing sinks to process the decomposed peridotite and investigate the contents for diamonds, with serious problems due to lack of water for cleansing. It appears that very small, impure carbonaceous diamonds, some 1 mm big, were found, whose profitability was more than questionable.

In the 1940s the salary for a child who worked in the mine was 56 pesetas per week.
