The original Camembert dates from 1706 and was reputedly invented by a Norman farm woman named Marie Harel. Camembert de Normadie is now a protected designation of origin (PDO) cheese and to bear the seal of authenticity it must be made following legally defined criteria. Its milk can only be legally produced in designated towns in four administrative districts in France. Needless to say, the vast majority of Camembert which reaches our shores does not meet these criteria and thus is really “fake” Camembert.
Enjoy the series as it grows and ripens but please do not leave any samples of your favorite cheese behind in a cache.
