Geocache Description:

WCHGT caches were created as the 2016-2017 Leadership Wayne class project. We decided that we wanted to create a fun, educational, and adventurous way for families and friends to connect to the county in which they live. Therefore, the 50 caches connected to this trail will give you a glimpse of the PAST, PRESENT, and FUTURE of Wayne County.

Some caches are micros, a few can hold a trackable, some are easy finds, and others prove to be quite difficult. All we ask from the Leadership Wayne class is that you enjoy the finds and learn something new about our wonderful county. Upon completion of the entire trail you will be able to collect your GeoCoin at the Wayne County museum after you have recorded your code words on the passport from each of the 50 locations.

Built in 1927, the school features a Classical Revival façade of brick and granite trim. Starting in the late 1940s, the high school featured the Goldmasquers a drama program that was distinguished throughout the state. Notable alumni include Rear Admiral Edward Outlaw; Major League Baseball player Clyde King, who played on the 1947 Brooklyn Dodgers when Jackie Robinson integrated the game; Major League Baseball Coach Jerry Narron; and NBA player and Coach Mike Evans. Andy Griffith, actor, also taught English here.  Since then the School of engineering has used the back half of Goldsboro high school as their schools location.

Other Goldsboro school history Dillard High School building (current location of the Dillard Academy Charter School at the end of Elm st). Built in 1925, Dillard High School served African American students living in Goldsboro. Among the school’s many successful alumni includes George Altman, Class of 1951, who played nine Major League Baseball seasons, and eight in Japan. Altman is the only left-hander to hit two homeruns in the same game off Hall of Fame pitcher Sandy Koufax.
