Some caches are micros, a few can hold a trackable, some are easy finds, and others prove to be quite difficult. All we ask from the Leadership Wayne class is that you enjoy the finds and learn something new about our wonderful county. Upon completion of the entire trail you will be able to collect your GeoCoin at the Wayne County museum after you have recorded your code words on the passport from each of the 50 locations.
The town of Pikeville, NC is home to approximately 670 citizens. Initially, the area was part of the Torhunta Native American community and was lost to the Tuscarora when European settlers banded together with Cherokee natives in the Tuscarora War. Later, the area was named Pike’s Junction due to the influence of Samuel Pike and his son Nathan. Nathan was a prosperous tavern and hotel keeper. The original site of his business and home were destroyed in 1865 during Sherman’s March.
