Geocache Description:

WCHGT caches were created as the 2016-2017 Leadership Wayne class project. We decided that we wanted to create a fun, educational, and adventurous way for families and friends to connect to the county in which they live. Therefore the 50 caches connected to this trail will give you a glimpse of the PAST, PRESENT, and FUTURE of Wayne County.

Some caches are micros, a few can hold a trackable, some are easy finds, and others prove to be quite difficult. All we ask from the Leadership Wayne class is that you enjoy the finds and learn something new about our wonderful county. Upon completion of the entire trail you will be able to collect your GeoCoin at the Wayne County museum after you have recorded your code words on the passport from each of the 50 locations.

Barnes-Hooks Farm

Historic farm and national historic district.

House built about 1874.

Located about 100 feet from the main house (lived in by Rudy and Karen Edmundson) and has other buildings around it including a mule stable, feed barn, tenant house, and tobacco farm.

The Barnes house is a rare early nineteenth-century vernacular house type. It was moved 100 feet away in 1920 so that an addition could be made to the Hooks house.

The Barnes-Hooks farm is a rare surving example of an eastern NC yeoman’s farm that has remained in the ownership of the same family for two hundred and fifty years.

Following the Civil War, the landowners followed the trend towards tenant farming and cotton and tobacco cultivation.

The farm represents an evolution of agricultural practices by having the additional buildings built around it to help including the mule stable, feed barn, tenant housing, etc.

Among the first arrivals to the area were members of the Hooks, Barnes, and Aycock families who arrived in the mid-eighteenth century.

NOTE: The cache is to be found off 117 and then Stuckey Road it is at the guardrail at the end of the road as it dead ends on the North side of 795. Cannot be accessed from the South side of I 795.
