When you get to this old, antiquated phone call receiving and out going call box you will notice it is locked. It has been locked since the 4th of May 1967 and has never been opened since. It was a proud day the 11th of April 1967. This was the day Grange got its first public telephone. People used to have to travel to Urlingford to make a call. There was no problems for the first two weeks, people making there calls and also patiently waiting across the road in the pub. It was mad to see it some nights when the pub would be full. A ring would be heard above the hustle and bustle of the night and then thirty people would all try and be the first person to answer the phone. That year Easter was late and the pub was closed for Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter Saturday and Easter Sunday. What happened next is still being paid for. On the Wednesday night before Easter one of the lads after making a phone call forgot to put the receiver down. This meant the phone call was still going on for the next four days until it was seen Monday morning. Telecom Eireann at the time had to leave this line open all that time for a phone call that nobody spoke on. Back then there were only four lines in the country which meant most of the country went without a quarter of the phone system for the Easter weekend. Since nobody owned up to it, Telecom Eireann managed to sue the village for the cost of the call. They had to pay 6.9 million pounds, as calls were more expensive in those days. Telecom Eireann decided to leave the box there as a reminder to all those in the village that they are never to forget. If you are ever in a shop in the area you might notice a collection box in the shape of a telephone box. Please do support the people of Grange to pay this bill.
