Memento Mori Traditional Cache
Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions
in our disclaimer.
Located near the back of Old Turnpike cemetery.
During the late 1700's it was popular to put a winged skull on gravestones, often with the words 'memento mori'. There are at least two stones here that say that, and many more with the winged skull surrounded by flowers and vines. The winged skull was symbolic of how the soul is freed and taken up into the afterlife. Memento Mori means "Remember that you will die" or more literally "Remember Death". There are quite a few Revolutionary war soldiers buried here, and an attempt at preserving some of the stones by removing the prolific black and gold lichens has been in progress. There are no posted hours but please be respectful and only cache from dawn to dusk. Driving into the cemetery is not permitted, park on the small pull off in front of the gate and enter there. No stones need to be disturbed while finding the cache.
