The City of Marana has constructed trails throughout the southern portion of the Tortollita mountains. There are many geocaches along these trails. To reach the northernmost caches from the official trailhead at the Ritz-Carlton resort a hike of more than ten miles is required. Since these were originally liknhikn caches (in other words, difficult) DNFs are common and several hikes must be made to find them all.
There is an alternative entrance. An old ranch road climbs up from the east and connects to the trail system. To reach it requires driving almost seven miles over rough road. (Figure forty minutes.) A high clearance vehicle is recommended, though an adventurous driver can make it with a passenger car. (I have.) The reward is a shorter but still strenuous hike.
This cache is on State Trust Land:
The State Land Department has no problem with this activity, but we ask that participants know the following:
A Recreation Permit is required to legally access State Trust Land. These permits are easily obtained online or get more information by phoning 602-364-2753.
Remember to stay on established roads and avoid any destruction of the natural resources. Permits can be obtained here.
