This was the second cemetery in Comet (or Cometville, as it was then known). In 1878, when the Great Northern Railway reached the town, the population was around 1500.
The information board at this site contains the names of people who died in the township and on local properties. Amongst these deaths were 52 children between 1877 and 1880. It’s not certain what caused these deaths but it’s believed they could have been due to the poor quality of the available drinking water.
