Geocache Description:

The Pink Granite of Anse Lazio

Anse Lazio
Anse Lazio is a beach situated in the northwest of Praslin Island. It has clear water and pleasing scenery, luring a large portion of Praslin's tourists. Anse Lazio is not protected by a coral reef.

The beach is bordered by large pink granite boulders.

The granite of Seychelles
The granites of the Seychelles were emplaced 750 Ma, during the late Precambrian.Thermally-induced rifting in the Somali Basin and transform rifting along the Davie fracture zone began in the late Permian 225 million years ago, with Gondwana supercontinent beginning to break up in the mid-Jurassic (about 167 million years ago) when East Gondwana, comprising Antarctica, Madagascar, India, and Australia, began to separate from Africa; East Gondwana then began to separate about 115–120 million years ago when India began to move northward.

What is Granite?
Granite is an igneous rock composed of mostly two minerals: quartz and feldspar. It is an intrusive rock, meaning that it crystallized from magma that cooled far below the Earth's surface. Its name is derived from the Latin word 'granum,' which means 'grain,' a reference to the easily-seen minerals in the rock.

What is pink granite ?
There are two obvious physical properties of granite that determine what it looks like: its texture (the size of the individual mineral grains) and its color. The variability in these two properties leads to a wide range of the appearance of granite.

The individual minerals in granite grow into visible grains because the magma cools slowly many miles below the surface. It is the size of the grains of different minerals that imparts the 'speckled' look to the rock.

Pink Granite, rich in potassium feldspars giving the distinctive pink hue, easily identifiable as a granite due to its mineral composition.

Why is the pink granite in Anse Lazio a special pink granite?
It's double pink, because of Laterite. Laterite is a soil and rock type rich in iron and aluminium, and is commonly considered to have formed in hot and wet tropical areas. Nearly all laterites are of rusty-red coloration, because of high iron oxide content. They develop by intensive and long-lasting weathering of the underlying parent rock.

To log this earthcache:

Send me the answers to the following tasks.
1. At GZ you will find some special granite boulders. First have a look at the texture. What is the grainsize at these boulders.
2. At GZ you will also find a anomaly in the pink color. There is a big spot in another color than pink. How big is the spot and what color is he? Do you have an idea why he isn't that pink?
3. So you find any traces of Laterite? When yes, where you find it?
4. Optional: It would be great, if you can upload some photos.
After sending me the answers, you can log the cache. If there are any problems I will contact you! Please enjoy!!
