St Canice's Church

The church

The foundation stone for St.Canice's Roman Catholic Church was laid on Bloody Sunday November 21st 1920. This church, named after a local patron, St.Canice was officially dedicated in December 1922 by the Archbishop of Dublin, Dr. Edward Byrne, and extended in 1955. All granite used in the church was sourced from quarries in Co.Dublin.

The present church replaced the Barn Church built in 1820 to replace an earlier Mass House which stood further south. It was called the Barn Church because of its simple architectural form and it marked a shift in influence from St.Margaret's, for centuries the centre of Roman Catholic worship in the area. It continued to serve as the parish church of Finglas until 1922. It was subsequently used as a parochial hall and parish centre until its demoliotion in the late 1970's. St.Canice's Roman Catholic Church is listed as a protected structure on the Dublin City record of protected structures.
