Geocache Description:

The Bald Eagle is the national emblem of the United States, so it seems fitting that I make this the first in my Ohio Birds Series of geocaches. Please replace cache carefully and be sure the log container is closed completely before returning the cache to its hiding spot.

The geocache remains as originally placed. The city of Eastlake has done a lot to improve this park!!! Cleaned up the building, asphalted the parking lot, removed old fence, placed picnic tables and bleacher, and an EagleCam was installed Oct.2020 with $25,500 funds raised by citizens and city. Unfortunately, the Eagles did not understand that they were the main reason for these improvements.....they built a new nest..........The nest that remains is barely noticeable since all the winter winds and no one tending to the structure. What remains, can be observed by the webcam (2-28-21, new electrical boxes being installed so not functioning temporaily).

Update February 27, 2021: The nest and eagles at this park, Bruce Yee, have relocated!!!! A new improved nest has been built and occupied by this pair of eagles. On 2-25-21, evidence has indicated that egg(s) have been laid and the pair are now taking turns on this new nest. It will be 25-35 days before we know if there are eaglets. The new nest can be viewed from the small parking lot behind Huntington Bank near Eastlake 500 Flags (GCY6QC).

Update 4-1-20: There has been lots of action at the nest January through March, with many Eagles courting the female of the nest. Because of this, the nest is showing signs that this will be another year with no eaglets.

Update 3-29-18: The behavior in the nest indicates that there is an eaglet. Food is being brought to the nest and the adults are behaving in a manor that has been recorded by webcam at other active eagle nests. If you think the nest is empty, it is not! When the adult is sitting on the eaglet(s), only a small part of the head can be seen, sometimes it seems to not be there at all. Stay around for at least 30 minutes and observe. You are bound to be treated to some spectacular natural behaviors!

Eastlake is very proud and excited that this pair of eagles, Kindness and Justice, built their nest as the baseball field was used during the fall of 2016. Games were halted as the eagles flew overhead bringing sticks and flying over the diamond. The Eastlake Eagle nest at Bruce Yee Park has developed a large number of people stopping at the park to check on it since the middle of February 2017 (and many people started viewing the nest before then). This pair of eagles can be seen flying in and out of the area daily. Many viewers are still hoping that this first year nest will have an eaglet or two, but others feel we'll have to wait another year. There is even a Facebook page dedicated to them (Eastlake Eagles' Aerie Watch).

4/25/17, most nest watchers are concluding that this nest will not have eaglets this year. Kindness and Justice will continue to fly and hunt in the area, guard their territory and this nest. When coming for this geocache throughout this summer, you may be lucky enough to see one or more of these eagles perched near or on the nest, or just fly over. Sometime in late December, they will start adding to the nest in preparation for eggs in mid-March.

As a life long birdwatcher and 1K geocacher with the trail name birdinglady, it is time I hide some caches with the intent to share some of my passion for birds. I always have binoculars in my geobag or on my neck, and a bird guide app on my phone. Because of the excitement of this eagle nest, this small city park usually has people watching or waiting for the eagles. Please use stealth while here! Also, obey the posted signs and fencing around the designated nest area by ODNR. The cache is located a short distance from where most cars and people hang-out. If the parking area is crowded, you might want to come back. If you are clever at disquising your search efforts (binoculars might be helpful), the eagle watching muggles will probably not notice you............except maybe one.
