According to ancient and medieval science, aether (spelled æther or ether) was also known by the name of quintessence as well as the 5th element. As a clasical element it was used to refer to the material that fills the region of the universe above the terrestrial sphere.
Aether (or Aither) was also one of the primordial deities in ancient Greece and is described in the fifth Orphic hymn to Aether as the substance with "the high-reigning, ever indestructible power of Zeus," "the best element," and "the life-spark of all creatures."
